The Pioneer: C117 Generation (2014–2019)
The first-generation CLA (C117) was a revolution for Mercedes, bringing younger buyers to the brand. Based on the MFA platform, it is mechanically identical to the A-Class but with a significantly more cramped interior. Reliability is generally good, but early models suffered from some interior quality issues.
The most common complaint is the stiff ride, especially on cars with the 'Sport' suspension and large wheels, which can lead to rattled interior trim over time. The introduction of mild-hybrid technology in later models has seen some 48V battery issues, and the high-resolution screens can occasionally glitch. However, the build quality is a step up, and the engines are more efficient and robust than ever.
- Verify all software updates for MBUX have been applied.
- Check for pixel failure or excessive heat from the dual dashboard screens.
- Ensure the 48V mild-hybrid system (if equipped) has no active faults.
Mechanical Priorities
Beyond the styling, the CLA requires the same mechanical oversight as any premium German vehicle. The engines are generally reliable, but the high-pressure fuel pumps and water pumps have shown some early failure patterns on higher-mileage examples.
Brake wear is also higher than average for a car of this size, likely due to the aggressive stability control interventions. Always prioritize a car with a documented service history that includes brake fluid and transmission oil changes.
- Listen for a high-pitched 'whine' from the water pump during warm-up.
- Verify the functioning of all LED headlights—replacements are extremely expensive.
