The Wet Belt Controversy
The timing belt runs in the engine oil. Using the wrong oil specification (even slightly) can cause the belt to degrade, clogging the oil intake with rubber fragments.
- Only use the exact Ford-spec oil.
- Never skip or delay oil changes.
- Check for rubber debris in the oil filter.
Cooling System Vulnerabilities
Early models had a plastic degas hose that could crack, leading to sudden coolant loss and engine failure (the original 'EcoBoom' cause).
- Check if the recall for the coolant hose was performed.
- Monitor head gasket health on higher mileage units.
- Listen for turbo whine or loss of power.
