BMW N47: Timing Chain & Reliability Guide

A technical view of a BMW N47 engine highlighting the timing chain area

Used throughout the 1 Series, 3 Series, and 5 Series (2007-2015), the N47 is a great engine overshadowed by one major engineering choice: the rear-mounted timing chain.

The Timing Chain Issue Explained

The timing chain is located at the back of the engine, making any repair an 'engine-out' job. While BMW improved the guides over time, the risk remains a factor for used buyers.

  • Early 2007-2011 models have the highest risk.
  • Listen for a 'shuffling' or 'marbles in a tin' sound from the back of the engine.
  • Frequent oil changes (every 10-15k km) help stave off wear.

Other N47 Concerns

Beyond the chain, the N47 is actually very reliable, though typical diesel issues like EGR clogging and HPFP wear apply.

  • Carbon buildup in the swirl flaps.
  • EGR valve recalls (check if yours was done).
  • Great torque and fuel economy if maintained.
