Why the B58 is Different

Unlike older BMW engines, the B58 uses a closed-deck design for extreme durability. It also simplified the accessory drive and improved the thermal management.

  • Closed-deck block for higher boost tolerance.
  • Water-to-air intercooler integrated into the manifold.
  • Sturdy VANOS and Valvetronic systems.

Known Issues to Watch

Even a 'masterpiece' has flaws. The most common reports involve the cooling system and the plastic oil filter housing.

  • Coolant loss from the turbo cooling lines or expansion tank cap.
  • Oil filter housing cracking (plastic component).
  • PCV diaphragm failure on higher mileage engines.
