The N47 is one of the most polarizing engines in BMW's history (Risk Score 8.0/10). On one hand, it offers incredible torque and can easily achieve 4.5L/100km on the highway. On the other, it hides a 'ticking time bomb' in the form of its widely documented timing chain issues. Early production years (2007 - 2011) are the most vulnerable, as the sprocket design was particularly aggressive. While BMW issued a 'quality enhancement' (recall) for many units, it wasn't a universal fix. Beyond the chain, the engine suffers from typical diesel teething issues, including sensitive DPF filters and EGR cooler leaks. Reliability is vastly improved in the later 'B47' successor, but for an N47, your only safety is a documented chain replacement or frequent 10,000 km oil changes to preserve the tensioners."
