The Mercedes-Benz GLE/ML (W166) is a solidly built vehicle, but its complexity leads to common issues in several areas outside the engine bay. These typically emerge as the vehicle passes 60,000 miles or 6 years of age.

Common Suspension Issues

Most W166 models are equipped with either the optional AIRMATIC air suspension or a standard steel-spring setup.

• AIRMATIC Air Springs: The air bellows are prone to leaks, often causing the car to sag after being parked. If ignored, this forces the compressor to run constantly, leading to its burnout. Replacement of air struts and the compressor can be very expensive ($1,500 - $3,000).

• Control Arm Bushings: Due to the vehicle's weight (approx. 2.2 tonnes), the front lower control arm bushings wear out, causing clunking noises over bumps and vague steering feel around 70,000 miles.

Electronic Glitches

The W166 features a complex electrical architecture which can suffer from intermittent bugs.

• NOx Sensors: On BlueTEC diesel models, NOx sensor failure is a very common issue, often triggering limp mode and requiring replacement to clear dashboard warnings.

• Blind Spot Assist Sensors: Rear bumper-mounted sensors are prone to water ingress and corrosion, leading to failure of the Blind Spot Assist system.

• COMAND Infotainment: Software glitches such as screen flickers or Bluetooth connectivity issues are occasionally reported, often fixable with a firmware update.

Gearbox and Drivetrain

The vehicle primarily uses the 7G-Tronic and later the 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions.

• Transmission Fluid Service: While generally reliable, these gearboxes are sensitive to fluid quality. Neglecting the recommended 40,000-60,000 mile service interval can lead to harsh shifting or hesitation.

• Transfer Case: In 4MATIC models, rare cases of transfer case chain stretch or bearing wear have been noted, though it's less common than in the previous W164 generation.

Interior Quality

The interior is generally high-quality, though some owners report creaks from the panoramic sunroof seals or minor trim rattles in higher-mileage examples. Sunroof drains should be kept clear to prevent water ingress into the cabin electronics.
